Varick Chittenden is Professor Emeritus of Humanities from SUNY Canton where he taught courses in American studies and folklore.
Varick is the founding director of Traditional Arts in Upstante New York, serving as director until 2008. As project director for TAUNY, Varick has been the curator of several folk art exhibits, including the exhibit “Kindred Pursuits: Folk Art in North Country Life” (which SOAR members toured several years ago), and “Out of the Ordinary (a large traveling exhibit of contemporary NY folk art). He curated an exhibit of Hazel Tyrrell birds for TAUNY in 2004.
Varick holds a master’s degree in American Folk Culture. He also has written numerous articles on folk art. His continuing research and writing interests include folk art, vernacular architecture, foodways and regional oral traditions.
