Thanksgiving has become a truly All-American holiday, with all the trimmings. This session will begin with a brief history of harvest festivals and American Thanksgiving in particular, and a discussion of common and not-so-well-known customs observed around the nation. It will conclude with participants deconstructing their own celebrations – from guest lists, menus, and seating arrangements to volunteering at public dinners and Black Friday shopping sprees.
Varick Chittenden is a folklorist, founding director of TAUNY and a retired teacher of folklore and American studies courses at SUNY Canton. He has been the curator of several folk art exhibits, including the exhibit “Kindred Pursuits: Folk Art in North Country Life” (which SOAR members toured last fall), and “Out of the Ordinary (a large traveling exhibit of contemporary NY folk art).
