This course uses war coverage of the 21st Century to introduce a critical perspective on our mass media. Topics included are: The media profit crisis of the late ‘00s and how it is affecting the news; the creation and mainstreaming of a new right-wing media surround-sound system; and the increasing importance of the entertainment media and soft news in shaping our views.
Calvin (Fred) Exoo is the author of three books and numerous articles on mass media and American politics. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, The Times (London), The Detroit News, the Los Angeles Times and the Baltimore Sun. Recently, he’s been blogging occasionally on the Huffington Post.
