The sestina is a highly structured poem consisting of 6 line stanzas followed by a tercet. Confused? Really, it’s more fun than playing Sudoku. Pick your theme, find six words that are key to that theme, and then write the poem. The pattern of a sestina is mathematical, but the thought is artistic. We will write our sestinas in class – sometimes with a little collective help. Later you can polish them to perfection.
Helen Condon has studied poetry at SUNY Potsdam and at the University of North Carolina Wilmington where she earned a graduate degree in creative writing.
NOTE: Bring a notebook and a pencil or pen to class.
