AARP’s Smart Driver Course is the successor program to “Defensive Driving” and is approved by New York State for insurance discounts and driver’s license point reduction. Smart Driver is the nation’s largest refresher course designed specifically for older drivers, but it is open to all age groups. The course helps participants update their driving knowledge, skills, and confidence. Research shows that, after completing the course, most people make positive changes to their driving behaviors.
David Stewart is a retired university administrator and former TV and radio reporter. He has been driving for six decades. David has taught almost 150 safe-driving courses, primarily in northern New York.
