Frederic Remington (1861-1909) lived during the heyday of the horse. Horses then were used routinely in farming, transportation and recreation. As a child, Frederic watched his father’s race horses at the Canton Fairgrounds; as an adult, he rode and owned his own horses. One of the main focuses of his artistic career was a realistic portrayal of horses on paper, on canvas, and later in bronze. Frederic Remington is credited with being one of the first artists to accurately portray a horse in full gallop. It can truly be said that “He Knew the Horse.”
