This course is designed especially for people who are afraid of the water. The goal of the course is to help people lose their fear by helping them learn how to go from feeling only danger to a position of finding safety and control in the water. Participants won’t be drilled in swimming strokes; instead they will find out what one can do in water to support oneself.

Hilda Sorenson retired from SUNY Oswego where she taught in the Health and Physical Education Department. Over the years, she has taught many beginners how to swim. Hilda swims every day; currently her “pool” is the St. Lawrence River.

Sheila Cerwonka is the life guard for this course. She has had many years of lifeguard experience and has given many CPR training classes from the early 70’s on, including a fall 2010 class in the latest CPR techniques for SOAR members.

NOTES: 1) No swim suit? Shorts and a shirt will work; 2) Bring extra towels as you will get in and out of the water several times; 3) Want something on your feet? Wear your “Crocs,” if you have them; they even float.
