The presenter will share his reminiscences about growing up in rural India. Some of the topics he will cover include: rural life, entertainments, family rivalries, the caste system, marriages, the partition of India in 1947 and other national and local topics and issues. He will display a variety of items he has brought with him from India – pictures, farm tools, games, etc.
After graduating from a parochial college in India, and seeing a dead-end future for himself in India, Chanchal Singh decided to apply to an American University. To his astonishment, he was accepted into graduate school in Berkeley. A good fellowship later lured him to the University of Michigan (where he met his future wife); then a teaching position at SLU brought him to Canton, NY -- and he knew that this was the place he wanted to stay and the life he wanted to have for himself and for his family.
