This course is about the many women who disguised themselves as men and enlisted in either the Union or Confederate armies. We will look at their motives for doing so, how they were able to maintain their male identity without being discovered, what types of occurrences led to their discovery, and what were the repercussions.
Martha Maine retired from the Canton School District after 34 years experience of teaching physical education. She is a Civil War re-enactor with the 2nd Michigan Infantry. Martha has participated in many local living histories / re-enactments and several national events, including Gettysburg, Cedar Creek, and the 150th anniversary of the Battle of First Bull Run.
