Explore the history of the 174 mile long Raquette River from its grand hotels and recreation at the southern end to the industry and logging at the northern end. The topics are: 1) the hydro development in the towns of Colton, Parishville and Pierrepont, 2) settlement patterns along the southern section of the river from Blue Mountain Lake to Axton Landing (near Tupper Lake).
Mary Jane Watson is a retired CPA who returned to school to obtain an MA in history from McGill University. She is active in the Raquette River Blueway Corridor project which seeks to make the Raquette River a regional tourist destination.
NOTE: This course includes a field trip to the South Colton Information Center (St. Hwy. 56 - across from the post office). Park on the street or in the South of the Rock Inn parking lot (the Inn is now closed). At 11:15 we will go to the South Colton Powerhouse (a last minute addition to our tour); and if there is time we will also later make a stop at nearby Sunday Rock.
