This course focuses on Amish cultures in the 21st century. Learn about the origins of the Amish, their connection to other Anabaptist groups (the Mennonites, the Hutterites, and the Brethren) and their relationship with other Amish groups, including the New Order Amish and the Beachy Amish. Discover the diversity in the Old Order Amish, particularly in the different Old Order Amish communities in the North Country.

Karen Johnson-Weiner is a professor of anthropology and currently the chair of the anthropology department at SUNY Potsdam. Driven by an interest in Pennsylvania German, she began to study Anabaptist cultures over 16 20 years ago. Her book on Old Order schools, Train Up a Child: Old Order Amish and Mennonite Schools, was published in 2007 by the Johns Hopkins University Press. This year her latest book, New York Amish, Life in the Plain Communities of the Empire State was published by Cornell University Press.
