Rowing with a crew in a sleek racing shell can be at once simple and complex, frustrating and beautiful. Physically fit people who have no major physical limitations and who have decent balance, strength enough to lift about 30 pounds from the floor to shoulder level, and who know how to swim are encouraged to try rowing. A Maxcy session will teach the rudiments of the stroke on rowing machines; actual rowing will be at Norwood Lake. (Guests and observers are welcome at any session, but they won’t be allowed to row.)

Ron Johnson and Dick Mooers have rowed with Grateful Oars Rowing Club, Norwood, for several years. Both have led many boating trips for Adirondack Mountain Club. Their rowing club crew (average age of 65) is preparing for the 2010 World Masters Regatta in Ontario.

NOTES: Participants must commit to attending all sessions as any absence will cancel the rowing session for their learning group. Wear comfortable, but not loose, clothing. Prospective students should refer to www.gratefuloars.org (the Grateful Oars Rowing Club web site) for more information about crew rowing.
