Dana Barry Educator Award Fall 2024

Dana Barry Educator Award Fall 2024

The Leon LeBeau Award, established in 2009, is awarded each Fall to honor a SOAR presenter who has made exceptional contributions to the educational experiences or well-being of SOAR members. Dana Barry is this year's recipient of this honor. What can one say about Dana Barry, our 2024 Leon LeBeau recipient? Brilliant. Multi-Talented. Renaissance Woman. Generous in spirit. These are but a few of the descriptions that so aptly fit this amazing woman. Dana is an internationally recognized scientist and a professor at Clarkson University and SUNY Canton. Her accomplishments are as long as an orangutan’s arm, and oh, so very stellar in purpose and range of fields. Dana has five graduate degrees, a doctorate degree, and has served as a visiting professor overseas numerous times. Would you believe that her name is on the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa-2, the first one in the world to land on an asteroid? If that’s not enough, she has published a plethora of academic papers and books in both English and Japanese. So how are these credentials related to SOAR and the Leon LeBeau Award? Dana for many years has taught a wide variety of courses for SOAR, including, but not limited to, “World of Robots and Artificial Intelligence”, “Using Avatars in a Virtual World”, “Japan and the US: Comparison and Differences”, “Beautiful Malaysia”, “The Beauty and Culture of Japan”, “Space Shuttle Experiments and Mars Exploration”, “John Phillip Sousa: The Man and his Music”, and just this fall taught “Generate New Ideas and Solve Problems Creatively”. Dana’s classes are invariably well attended by our SOAR members, who highly praise her extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for her topics. Dana, please come up to receive your honor and to be acknowledged for all your extensive contributions to the SOAR mission of learning and educating our members!
