On October 20, 1944, General Douglas MacArthur made his triumphant return to the Philippines with the invasion of Leyte Island. Days later, the U.S. and Imperial Japanese navies engaged in history's largest sea battle in Leyte Gulf. Nearly 300 ships and 200,000 sailors and aviators were involved. This course will focus on the roles of key USN and IJN personnel, on each navy's bold plans to achieve victory, and on some astounding events involving both navies.
Doug Rose developed an interest in World War II during his teens in the 1960s. While teaching War and Literature at SUNY Canton, he assigned various texts about the war to his students, including The Battle of Leyte Gulf by Thomas J. Cutler.
