Will Elephants in the Wild Become Extinct? [F-26-56]

In this course you will learn about the evolution, history, physical characteristics, environment and social behavior of elephants. We will examine the human and elephant conflicts that are driving both the Asian and African elephants towards extinction. Between 2006 and 2016 the wild elephant population in Africa declined by 30% or 111,000 individuals. Between now and 2030 Africa's human population will grow by 130 million to 1.7 billion increasing the demand for more agricultural land. Over the last three generations the Asian elephant population has decreased by 50%. Poaching of elephants for the tusks continues to meet the increase demand for ivory. We will review the efforts by individuals, private organizations and governments to save the wild elephants.

John McDonald retired from IBM and Arrow Electronics, He has had a lifelong interest in Africa and its wildlife. After graduation from college he spent time with Dave Hoover, the lion and tiger trainer for the Clyde Beatty and Cole Bros, Circus. He corresponded with George Adamson of "Born Free" fame and was offered the opportunity to conduct field research on Adamson's lions in Kenya. After retiring, over a three year period he traveled to Africa multiple times working with Cheetahs in Namibia and observing elephants in Etosha National Park .
