Two Years on the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga [F-26-48]

The presenter just published a book which contains weekly letters from when he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Tonga (Amazon Books: "The Tonga Letters"). The course will include readings from these letters which describe what it was like to be on a remote South Pacific island teaching biology for two years. It will also have slides and demonstrations showing the Tongan culture: kava drinking, spearfishing, weddings, wearing skirts, opening coconuts, and making tapa cloth.

Bill Romey is an Emeritus Professor of Biology at SUNY Potsdam, where he taught Animal Behavior, Insect Biology, Freshwater Biology, and Winter Ecology. As a 23-year old, he spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer on the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga. While teaching high school biology there, he learned Tongan, learned how to spearfish, and traveled widely among the hundreds of islands.
