From 1994 to 1996 Herman's research lab performed three NASA space flight studies on skeletal muscle loss in outer space aboard the Space Shuttles Atlantis and Endeavour. He will describe the results and how it transitioned into a new way to study muscle diseases on earth.

Herman Vandenburgh received his Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania in 1976 and spent five years as a Staff Fellow at the National Institutes of Health. He joined the faculty at Brown University in 1981. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, and Molecular Pharmacology at Brown University.
