The Manchurian Candidate – a brainwashed operative hiding in plain sight until triggered by enemy handlers – is a staple of American conspiracy theories in fiction and (perceived) fact. This course will explore the fascination with this character by comparing filmed versions of The Manchurian Candidate from 1962 and 2004. The instructor will provide short readings and screenings of relevant scenes during each session to inspire discussion.
NOTE: If possible, view John Frankenheimer’s Manchurian Candidate (1962) before the first session, and view Jonathan Demme’s version (2004) before the second session.
