The SOAR Board of Directors met on June 10 via Zoom under the leadership of our new Chair, Lyn Swafford, and decided that we must cancel classes for the Fall 2020 semester. All memberships for the 2019-2020 year will be extended so that members can participate in opportunities that we hope to make available throughout the fall of 2020. The nature of those opportunities is under development and will be announced regularly in the Newsletter, on our website soarnorthcountry.com and on our new Facebook page www.facebook.com/soarnorthcountry (thank you to Laurell Brault for setting this up).
While we work to develop our own offerings, we will call your attention to materials on the world-wide web that may sustain you during the time of social distancing.
First, we were planning to offer the AARP Driver Safety Course with David Stewart, our usual instructor. He informs us that AARP has cancelled all in-person events including Driver Safety. Without endorsing, SOAR calls your attention to the on-line course. AARP suggests: “You may continue directing participants to the AARP Smart Driver online course as an alternative, especially for those who need to renew their car insurance discount. Website: www.aarpdriversafety.org Promo code for 25% discount: DRIVINGSKILLS (for AARP members). Good through: December 31, 2020
Second, for all who miss Ruth Kreuzer’s Vicarious Voyagers, our affiliate, Road Scholar, offers a series of pale imitations of her 24 semesters of presentations. It’s not like gathering in the Civic Center with local adventurers, but it may slake your travel-lust. Here is the site to explore: www.roadscholar.org/virtuallearning We hope to sustain communication with you as we all cope with the COVID-19 crisis.
